Unanswered Question: so how did Ben know how to summon the smoke monster to kill the mercinaries, and how did it get past the sonic fence and why would it be on Ben’s side anyways at that point and why did it only kill the mercinaries. I mean darma was trying to keep the smoke guy out as were the others when they took over newotherton. on the black rock it did not kill those in chains. perhaps a rule- can only kill free men.

@jdplus3 Well it seems like he wants some followers, so he killed the mercenaries that were a threat for the Others. Also he probably planned to used Ben, Locke, and some of the main characters for his plans, so he wanted them to live. As for Eko I’m not sure but I’m sure as the season progresses he motives will be more clear.

@jdplus3 He did not kill him because he tried to use Richard to kill Jacob! He scanned his memories, and used Richard´s desire to see his wife again to manipulate him. As we all know: he can´t kill Jacob himself.

@HooverBeast I think “La fleur” refers to the lawman who hunted down butch cassidy in “the sundance kid”. maybe that´s the reason why he uses the name in both timelines…

@jdplus3 Don’t think it’s a free man thing, jd. In the Richard episode, Jacob told MIB that someone would take his place if MIB killed him. MIB left only 1 person alive, Richard, meaning there is no “candidate” to replace Jacob should he be killed. The fact that it was Richard is purely coicidental. He was the surviving slave furthest from the stairs when the Cap’n started thinning the herd.
