Until Ken Burns came along, this style of documentary was firmly established as the haute couture by David L. Wolper.
Woody Allen carries this satire in the Wolper mode magnificently and you almost believe Zelig was a real historical figure.

One of the great things about Woody Allen’s movies is that no matter how sophisticated the theme or how low-key and naturalistic the tone, they’re always full of the corniest borscht-belt one-liners like the bowling alley joke in this clip. I love it.

Zelig is a true masterpiece. Unfortunately, it gets rated well below Annie Hall and Love & Death.
